EU
A regulation affecting AI is the Data Governance Act - a regulatory framework aimed at fostering trust in data sharing and increasing data availability by addressing technical barriers. It supports the creation of common European data spaces across sectors like health, environment, energy, finance, and more, involving both public and private entities.
EU
Another regulation affecting AI is the Digital Services Act (DSA) – the DSA is a regulation aimed at ensuring a safer, more transparent online environment while protecting consumer and business rights. It imposes obligations on online platforms to address illegal content, hate speech, and disinformation, with stricter rules for large platforms and search engines. Effective from November 16, 2022, the DSA applies across all EU member states since January 1, 2024, impacting various online service providers.
California
California's SB 1047 ("The Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act”) mandates strict safety checks for developers of the most powerful AI models before they begin building them. The bill has sparked controversy, with supporters emphasizing the need to mitigate catastrophic risks, while critics argue it could stifle innovation and should be handled federally. It requires compliance audits and prohibits using models that pose critical harm. Passed by the legislature on August 28, 2024, the bill now awaits Governor Newsom's decision by September 30
Canada
Meanwhile, Canada has proposed Bill C-27, marking a significant step in AI regulation. This bill, known as the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), adopts a principle-based strategy to ensure that AI is appropriately overseen and managed, reflecting Canada's commitment to controlled and ethical AI deployment
China
Since 2021, China has been gradually implementing laws to govern AI technologies. In 2023, the country enacted several national regulations aimed at digital platforms and AI-created content, such as deepfakes, establishing strong safeguards against common potential AI-related issues.
India
The approach to AI regulation in India has shifted from a hands-off stance. Despite stating in April 2023 that it had no plans for AI-specific legislation, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology later mandated that platforms experimenting with or developing AI tools must get governmental approval before their release.
