The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked a global conversation on regulation. Governments and organizations worldwide are facing the challenge of balancing innovation with ethical and safety concerns, with the increased demand for digital trust for AI systems.
As reported in the January issue of this newsletter, in Europe and USA as well as in other parts of the world, authorities are actively developing frameworks to address the demand. This calls for the creation of assurance for systems using AI.
The need for ‘AI Assurance' services encompassing both the system side including governance, risk, and compliance, as well as the technology side including AI, ML, and software technology is expected to grow significantly as regulations and standards on artificial intelligence such as the EU’s AI Act, the recently published international standard ISO/IEC 42001, and US’s NIST Digital Trust framework are taking shape.
That is why Nemko decided to enter the AI Assurance market. As part of this initiative, Mónica Fernández Peñalverjoined Nemko as head of ‘AI Assurance’. Mónica has masters in AI with a background in neuroscience. Being fascinated by the intricate workings of the human brain, she has grown an interest in the ethics around AI and the technical and societal challenges associated with implementing influential technologies.
In recent years, she has been actively involved in projects that advocate for and advance responsible AI through research, education, and policy. Most recently, her focus has been on developing methods to detect and mitigate AI bias by addressing ethical, legal, and social challenges.
As Head of ‘AI Assurance’, Mónica will be the key person in creating Nemko’s position and offerings in assuring the trustworthiness, fairness, safety, and effectiveness of AI systems. She will report to and work closely with Nemko’s Chief Digitalisation Officer in creating Nemko’s strategic vision, roadmap, and service portfolio in AI Assurance.
